Life Sciences Division Staff Hosts Annual Meeting of ICRP Task Group (April 2000)

During the week of April 10-14, Drs. Rich Leggett and Keith Eckerman hosted the annual meeting of the International Commission on Radiological Protection’s (ICRP’s) task group on biokinetic modeling and internal dosimetry (INDOS). The meeting was held at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg and was attended by 20 scientists from the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South America. The ICRP provides international guidance on occupational, environmental, and medical exposure to radiation. ICRP-INDOS recently published a series of reports containing the first international recommendations for biokinetic models and dose estimates for intake of radionuclides by members of the public. It is now updating its models and recommendations for occupational exposure to radionuclides, and these new models were the main topic of this meeting. Leggett and Eckerman developed a major portion of the ICRP’s age-specific biokinetic and dosimetric models for members of the public and are also taking the lead in the development of new models for occupational exposure.
